CROWN COURT FINDS A20 SPEED RESTRICTION UNLAWFUL

For more than two years, I’ve been campaigning alongside neighbouring MPs Laura Trott and Louie French against the unfair fines handed to drivers on the A20 eastbound following botched roadworks.
You may remember that hundreds of local people were fined following inadequate and confusing signage, much of it at odds with sat nav systems. TfL even admitted that an incorrect sign had been put up by a so-called “third party”.
Some drivers received multiple fines and penalty points, with some even losing their jobs as a result.
Despite voicing our concerns repeatedly, TfL insisted that the correct procedures had been followed.
Now, a Crown Court ruling has found that the Traffic Order and Notice used by TfL were unlawful, meaning the temporary speed restriction was unlawful in the first place.
This is a major development after two years of campaigning.
We have now written again to the Mayor of London and demanded that TfL explains how affected motorists can have their convictions overturned, penalty points removed and fines repaid, as well as what compensation will be offered to those who have suffered as a result.
You can read the letter below. The Mayor must finally now do the right thing.
